Using revenue tracking even when you don't sell anything
Everyone should be tracking revenue, even if you aren't making sales on the site. What? Sounds like nonsense, right? But if you have a lead capture system or even a specific goal page like a file download, then it makes sense to track 'revenue' by assigning a value to this goal page, even if that number doesn't necessarily have any basis in reality. Once you assign a value to this goal page in the revenue tracking configuration of ClickTracks, you will begin seeing figures for total sales, revenue, revenue per visitor, ROAS, and more. Using these numbers, you can compare your referrers, keywords, campaigns, etc. on these measures and gain much more insight than you would by simple checking out the stats for that particular page. for example, you'll be able to tell that Campaign 1 resulted in a ROAS of $2.50 (for every dollar spent) while Campaign 2 resulted in a ROAS of $1.00. Even if those numbers don't reflect how much you ultimately earn, they definitely show you that Campaign1 is much more effective than Campaign 2--even if Campaign 2 resulted in more visitors or even more sales.
Setting up this kind of revenue tracking is very simple:
1) Go into the revenue tracking configuration
2) Check "Track revenue by goal page"
3) Select the goal page of interest
4) Enter the amount you want to assign to this page. This number can be completely arbitrary, but if it has some basis in reality, so much the better.
